Atlanta, Georgia Travel Guide

Atlanta is more than a layover or a quick weekend stop. It’s a city of completely different neighborhoods, great food, museums, green spaces, markets, breweries and plenty to do. Since Atlanta is my home area, these are the places and experiences I’d actually recommend when you’re visiting.

Things to do

In and around Atlanta

  • 📍 Atlanta at a Glance

Great for: Food · Weekend trips · Museums · Outdoor spaces · Girls trips · Group trips

My Biggest TipAtlanta is spread out. Group the things you want to do by neighborhood rather than driving back and forth across the city.

  • 🏓 Painted Pickle

Active + Social · 279 Ottley Drive NE, Atlanta. A fun, social indoor spot built around pickleball, with food and drinks plus additional games. The atmosphere makes it a good pick for groups, dates or a girls day.

VeggieTravelGirl TipIf you want something more interactive than another restaurant or bar, this is a fun group activity.

  • 🎨 High Museum of Art

Art + Culture · 1280 Peachtree Street NE, Atlanta. One of my recommended indoor Atlanta activities, with multiple floors, art collections and rotating exhibitions. It’s a great rainy-day activity — and just as useful on a very hot Atlanta day.

VeggieTravelGirl TipCheck the current exhibition calendar before visiting because what’s on display changes.

  • 🎭 Fox Theatre

Art + Culture · 660 Peachtree Street NE, Atlanta. One of Atlanta’s iconic cultural venues — a historic theater hosting Broadway productions, concerts, comedy and other performances, with an elaborate interior and architecture. It’s worth checking the calendar to see what’s happening during your visit.

VeggieTravelGirl TipEven the building is part of the experience. Check the calendar before your trip to see what’s playing while you’re in Atlanta.

  • 🚶 Atlanta BeltLine

Outdoors + Exploring. Great for walking, public art, restaurants, breweries, shops and exploring different Atlanta neighborhoods. You don’t need to walk the entire BeltLine — pick a stretch near what you want to see and explore from there.

  • 🌳 Piedmont Park

Outdoors + Exploring. A favorite for walking, relaxing, skyline views, picnics and simply spending time outdoors.

VeggieTravelGirl TipPair Piedmont Park with the Atlanta Botanical Garden since they’re right next to each other.

  • 🌸 Atlanta Botanical Garden

Outdoors + Exploring. Gardens, photography, installations and a relaxing outdoor experience right next to Piedmont Park. Exhibits change, so check what’s on before you go.

  • 🏙️ Ponce City Market

Outdoors + Exploring. Food, shopping, browsing and direct BeltLine access, plus a rooftop experience. Some rooftop activities may require separate admission.

  • 🥕 Sandy Springs Farmers Market

Markets · North of Atlanta · 1 Galambos Way, Sandy Springs, GA. Local vendors, produce, prepared foods and artisan products with a casual Saturday-morning atmosphere.

VeggieTravelGirl TipCheck the current market schedule before visiting since farmers market dates and hours can change seasonally.

  • 🍺 Monday Night Brewing — The Grove

West Midtown · 670 Trabert Ave NW, Atlanta. A large indoor/outdoor space with lots of seating and TVs. Beyond beer (including sours), there are cocktails, coffee, matcha, pastries and food with vegetarian/vegan-friendly possibilities. Parking was free during my visit, but that may change.

My TakeI like this spot because you don’t have to be a beer person to enjoy it. You can grab food, coffee, matcha or a drink and hang out inside or outside.

  • 🎶 Coca-Cola Roxy — My Favorite Atlanta Music Venue

The Coca-Cola Roxy at The Battery Atlanta is my favorite music venue in the Atlanta area! I love the more intimate concert atmosphere compared with a huge arena, and The Battery makes it easy to grab food or drinks before a show.

Where800 Battery Ave SE #500, Atlanta, GA 30339

  • 🏛️ First Time in Atlanta? Atlanta Classics

Well-known stops that are useful for first-time visitors:

    • Georgia Aquarium
    • World of Coca-Cola
    • Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park
    • National Center for Civil and Human Rights
    • Centennial Olympic Park
  • 🚗 Getting Around Atlanta

Atlanta is very spread out, so having a car or using rideshare makes exploring much easier.

    • Driving: gives you the most flexibility, particularly when exploring outside central Atlanta.
    • Uber + Lyft: useful if you don’t want to drive or deal with parking.
    • Walking: areas like the BeltLine, Piedmont Park and parts of Midtown are enjoyable on foot once you get there.

VeggieTravelGirl TipAtlanta traffic is real. Group your plans by neighborhood instead of driving back and forth across the city.

  • Stay Active While Traveling

I use ClassPass when I travel because a traditional gym membership tied to one location doesn’t work well with how often I’m away from home. I’ve used it for workouts around the U.S., including Georgia, Colorado and Oregon.
